Changing Perspectives

Updated: Jul 10, 2019

When it comes to building a better you, you must understand that your perspective colors your world. Understanding this allows you to change how you perceive the world and the events therein. If you change your perspective of the situation then your reaction to it changes as will your level of stress.

Let's look at an example. You meet a 13 year old girl who acts like a wolf. She howls and barks at people and moves around on all four limbs. Your initial perspective might tell you that she lacks discipline at home or that she really loves animals. Yet another way of viewing her behavior could be that she believes in earnest that she is a wolf. You have no proof of either, but you are letting your experience color your interpretation of her behavior. Her behavior may result from being treated like an animal in her younger years so much so that she has learned to cope with life via animal behavior. If you find yourself struggling to alter your perception do one of two things: 1) acquire more information about the situation, 2) put yourself into another position within the situation. In the above example you could ask the girl or her parents for additional information about the behavior or could look at the situation the girl is in and evaluate from her point of view.

You have to be willing to allow yourself to see things different then allow your thoughts to change accordingly.
